Dahab Itinerary: How to Spend 3, 5 or 7 Days

A white day boat moored off the coast of Dahab, with the mountains behind

A good Dahab itinerary mixes one sea day, one desert day and, if your visa allows it, one night on Mount Sinai, with free time in between. Three days is enough for the Blue Hole plus either the desert canyons or a Mount Sinai sunrise. Five days lets you do all of that without rushing.

Seven days adds a yacht day, a second canyon and real rest. The plans below use the actual start and finish times of Dahab Go trips, so nothing overlaps and you are never asked to be in two places at once.

Each plan comes with a simple table. Swap days around to suit the weather and your arrival date, but keep the timing rules in the next sections in mind. Ignoring them is the easiest way to overload a short stay.

How many days in Dahab do you need?

If you want both the sea and the desert, three full days is a realistic minimum and five is comfortable. Dahab is small and slow, and a big part of its appeal is sitting by the water between trips. If you fill every hour, you miss that.

  1. 3 days: one sea trip, one desert trip and either Mount Sinai or a lighter day. Good for a short break from Sharm el-Sheikh or Cairo.
  2. 5 days: sea, desert, Mount Sinai and one extra trip, with a free morning to recover after the night climb.
  3. 7 days: most of the main trips, a free day for a lesson or the beach, and a rest day after the Mount Sinai night.

Count only full days in Dahab. The day you arrive and the day you leave are usually lost to the road, especially if you fly into Sharm el-Sheikh. The drive from Sharm to Dahab is roughly one to one and a half hours depending on traffic and checkpoints (check before you go). If you land late, plan nothing for the first evening except dinner.

The timing rules behind every Dahab itinerary

Before you look at the plans, it helps to know the five things that decide what fits where. These come straight from the trip schedules, not from guesswork.

Mount Sinai takes a night and a morning

The Mount Sinai sunrise trip with St. Catherine picks you up at 22:00, drives to St Catherine, climbs through the night with a Bedouin guide, watches sunrise at the summit, walks down past St Catherine’s Monastery and gets you back to your hotel at about 11:00. That is around 13 hours with little or no sleep.

So do not book anything for the morning after. Plan a slow, light afternoon, and keep the day before easy too. A canyon trip that ends at 17:00 followed by a 22:00 pickup is possible on paper, but you will enjoy the summit more if you arrive rested.

The All-in-One day runs only on Mondays and Fridays

The Dahab All-in-One: 6 adventures in 1 day runs from 6:00 to 19:00, and only on Mondays and Fridays. It starts in the desert with a quad bike, a camel ride and Bedouin tea in a tent, then moves to the sea for a banana boat, a glass-bottom boat and a yacht cruise with snorkelling and lunch. If one of your days falls on a Monday or Friday and you want a lot packed into one day, it can replace the sea day or the yacht day in any plan below.

You need a full Egypt visa for Mount Sinai

If you fly into Sharm el-Sheikh, you may be offered a free Sinai-only entry stamp. According to the UK government’s Egypt entry requirements page, that stamp is for travellers arriving by air at Sharm el-Sheikh and staying less than 15 days at the resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. The same page says that if you plan to travel outside the resorts or stay longer, you need a visa.

The stamp does not cover St Catherine or Mount Sinai, so for the sunrise trip you need a full Egypt visa. Visa rules change, so check before you go, and if you are unsure whether another inland trip is covered, ask before you book.

Arrival and departure days

Treat the arrival day as free time. Walk the seafront, find dinner, and book your trips for the next days on WhatsApp. On the departure day, book nothing that could make you late for the drive back to the airport.

Wind and sea decide the boat days

On the yacht trips, the captain picks the snorkelling spots on the day according to wind and sea. Keep a little flexibility: if a boat day looks windy, move a desert trip forward and put the boat later in the week.

Dahab trip times at a glance

These are the trips used in the plans below. For each one, check the time, what’s included and the current price on the trip page, and book there on WhatsApp. There is no prepayment; you pay in cash on the day, and hotel pickup anywhere in Dahab plus the return drive are included.

Trip Time Type
Blue Hole + Abu Galum + Blue Lagoon 9:00 to 17:00 Sea: snorkelling, zodiac, lagoon
Colored Canyon + White Canyon + Ein Khudra 8:30 to 17:00 Desert: walking, Land Cruiser
Mount Sinai Sunrise + St. Catherine 22:00 pickup, back about 11:00 Night climb and sunrise
Three Pools + Beach Buggy to Wadi Gnai 11:00 to 17:00 Sea and desert
Wadi Weshwash + Ras Shitan 8:30 to about 18:00 Desert canyon, pools, beach
Full-Day Yacht on the Red Sea 8:30 to 16:00 Sea: cruise and snorkel stops
Sunset Yacht with Dinner 16:00 to 21:00 Evening on the water
Dahab All-in-One 6:00 to 19:00, Mondays and Fridays only Desert and sea in one day

Two trips in this list can never share a day: the Three Pools trip ends at 17:00 and the sunset yacht leaves at 16:00. A full sea or desert day and the Mount Sinai pickup can technically share a day, but the plans below keep them apart on purpose.

3-day Dahab itinerary

If you are wondering what to do in Dahab in 3 days, start with the sea and the Blue Hole, the area’s best-known snorkelling site. After that, choose between a second full day out (Version A) or a Mount Sinai night (Version B).

Version A: things to do in Dahab in 3 days, sea and desert

Day Daytime Evening
Day 1 Blue Hole + Abu Galum + Blue Lagoon, 9:00 to 17:00 Walk the seafront promenade, dinner in town
Day 2 Colored Canyon + White Canyon + Ein Khudra, 8:30 to 17:00 Early night
Day 3 Slow morning at the Lighthouse, then Three Pools + Beach Buggy, 11:00 to 17:00 Free

Day 1 is the Blue Hole, Abu Galum and Blue Lagoon trip. You snorkel the reef wall at the Blue Hole from the beach, ride a zodiac north along the coast to Ras Abu Galum, a protected area with no road, and spend free time at the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Hole entry ticket is a protectorate fee paid on site in cash and is not included; check the current amount before you go. The guide, snorkel mask and zodiac ride are included. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water, cash and your own fins if you have them.

Day 2 is the Colored Canyon and White Canyon trip: a Land Cruiser into the desert, a walk through the narrow Colored Canyon, then the White Canyon and Mushroom Rock, and Bedouin tea at the Ein Khudra oasis. Lunch is included. You walk on sand and rock, through narrow passages and over a few short climbs, so wear grippy shoes.

Day 3 starts late. The Three Pools and beach buggy trip leaves at 11:00, snorkels the shallow coral gardens south of Dahab, then you drive your own beach buggy through the desert to the Wadi Gnai palm oasis. The Three Pools entry is a group ticket paid on site. Bring a scarf or buff for the dust.

If Day 3 is a Monday or Friday, you can replace it with the All-in-One day. If you would rather end on the water, swap Three Pools for the sunset yacht with dinner from 16:00 to 21:00 and keep the whole morning free.

Version B: 3 days with Mount Sinai

Day Daytime Evening
Day 1 Blue Hole + Abu Galum + Blue Lagoon, 9:00 to 17:00 Dinner, pack warm layers for tomorrow night
Day 2 Free: beach, Lagoon, long lunch, afternoon nap 22:00 pickup for Mount Sinai
Day 3 Sunrise at the summit, back at your hotel about 11:00, sleep Sunset yacht with dinner, 16:00 to 21:00 (optional) or a quiet dinner

This version gives you two of the area’s best-known sights, the Blue Hole and the Mount Sinai sunrise, without stacking them. Day 2 is deliberately empty in daylight. Use it to rest.

You will be walking uphill in the dark from about 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning: roughly 2.5 to 3 hours up, 30 to 45 minutes at the top and 1.5 to 2 hours down. No hiking experience is needed, only normal fitness. It is cold at the summit before sunrise, so bring a jacket, hat and gloves, a head torch, walking shoes, water, a snack and your passport. The Bedouin guide and the protectorate entry ticket are included on this trip.

The sunset yacht on Day 3 is optional. Some people are back to normal after a few hours of sleep; others are not. Decide on the morning itself and message on WhatsApp to ask whether you can still join that evening.

5-day Dahab itinerary

Five days is where a Dahab itinerary starts to feel relaxed. You get the main sea trip, the main desert trip, Mount Sinai and one more day out, plus mornings with nothing booked.

Day Daytime Evening
Day 1 Blue Hole + Abu Galum + Blue Lagoon, 9:00 to 17:00 Promenade and dinner
Day 2 Colored Canyon + White Canyon + Ein Khudra, 8:30 to 17:00 Early night
Day 3 Free morning, then Three Pools + Beach Buggy, 11:00 to 17:00 (or the All-in-One if it is a Monday or Friday) Free
Day 4 Free: beach, Lagoon, a lesson, or nothing at all 22:00 pickup for Mount Sinai
Day 5 Back at your hotel about 11:00, sleep Sunset yacht with dinner, 16:00 to 21:00

Why this order? Day 1 and Day 2 put the two big trips early, so if wind or a delay pushes something back, you still have days to move it.

Day 3 starts at 11:00, which gives you a lie-in after two early starts. Day 4 is free in daylight so you arrive at the Mount Sinai sunrise climb rested. Day 5 ends your stay on the water with dinner on board.

If Mount Sinai is not possible for you, for example because you only have the Sinai-only stamp, replace Day 4 and Day 5 with the full-day yacht on the Red Sea (8:30 to 16:00) and the Wadi Weshwash and Ras Shitan trip (8:30 to about 18:00). Wadi Weshwash is inland near Nuweiba, so if you only have the stamp, ask when you book whether your entry papers cover it. As always, check the time, what’s included and the current price on each trip page and book there on WhatsApp.

7-day Dahab itinerary

A week lets you see most of what is around Dahab and still have time where the only plan is breakfast by the sea. This plan includes every main trip type, with a free day before Mount Sinai and a rest day after it.

Day Daytime Evening
Day 1 Blue Hole + Abu Galum + Blue Lagoon, 9:00 to 17:00 Promenade and dinner
Day 2 Colored Canyon + White Canyon + Ein Khudra, 8:30 to 17:00 Early night
Day 3 Free day: the beach, the Lagoon, a trial lesson, an afternoon nap 22:00 pickup for Mount Sinai
Day 4 Back at your hotel about 11:00, sleep Sunset yacht with dinner, 16:00 to 21:00 (optional)
Day 5 Full-Day Yacht, 8:30 to 16:00 (or the All-in-One if it is a Monday or Friday) Free
Day 6 Wadi Weshwash + Ras Shitan, 8:30 to about 18:00 Early night
Day 7 Free morning, then Three Pools + Beach Buggy, 11:00 to 17:00 Last dinner by the sea

Mount Sinai sits on the night of Day 3 because Day 3 is already free in daylight, so you rest in the afternoon and leave at 22:00. You are back about 11:00 on Day 4, which is why nothing else is booked that day except the optional sunset yacht. If the days of the week work out differently for you, keep the same pattern: a light day before the climb, and never a morning trip the day after it.

Day 5 is a sea day. The full-day yacht cruises along the coast with snorkelling and swimming stops and lunch on board, and soft drinks and hotel transfers are included. The whole yacht can also be booked privately, which is worth asking about if you travel as a family or a group of friends.

Wadi Weshwash is a narrow granite canyon near Nuweiba with freshwater pools. You walk in with a Bedouin guide and swim or jump only where the water is deep enough, then have lunch and beach time at Ras Shitan. Water levels change through the year, since winter rain feeds the pools, so bring shoes that can get wet and a dry bag.

Seven days and travelling alone? The Sinai Loop

If you are a solo traveller and would rather not plan each day yourself, The Sinai Loop is a 7-day small-group trip in Dahab and Nuweiba, for solo travellers only. Rooms are shared, so there is no single supplement, and you need a full Egypt e-visa for it. The page explains the route, what is included and the group size; see the page for dates. Our Dahab solo travel guide covers the rest of what is useful to know when you come on your own.

Free time in Dahab: what to do between trips

Every plan above has empty mornings and evenings. That is on purpose. Dahab is a place where an afternoon in a seafront café counts as an activity. Here are easy ways to use the free time.

The promenade and the Lighthouse area

According to Frommer’s, the whole town stretches about 4 km along the coast. The old part is made up of Assala in the north, Masbat (the oldest part) in the middle and Mashraba in the south, linked by a long walkway along the water. Most of it is easy to walk, and the seafront is lined with cafés where you can sit for hours. The Lighthouse and Assala end is the busiest part of town, with cafés and shops close together, and is a natural place for a morning swim or an evening walk.

The Lagoon

The Dahab Lagoon is a wide, shallow bay at the south end of town with flat water and steady wind. Windsurfing and kitesurfing schools there rent gear and give lessons, and the shallow water suits beginners. Even if you do not take a lesson, it is a good place to watch the sails in the late afternoon.

Lessons and schools

Dahab has many dive schools and is well known for freediving. A free day in your Dahab itinerary is the right slot for a trial lesson, whether it is freediving, kitesurfing or yoga. Book these directly with the schools; Dahab Go runs day trips, not courses.

Evenings

Evenings are usually dinner on the seafront and an early night before the next pickup. If you want one evening on the water, the sunset yacht runs from 16:00 to 21:00 with dinner and drinks on board, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

Adjusting your Dahab trip to the season

Dahab is sunny all year, but the season changes which trips feel good. October to May is the best period for desert trips and Mount Sinai. From June to September it is hot inland, and canyon trips start early so the walls still give shade. Sea trips work in every season.

  • Winter: the Mount Sinai summit is cold at night. Bring real warm layers, not just a light jacket. Winter rain can also fill the pools at Wadi Weshwash.
  • Summer: do your desert walking in the morning and spend the hottest hours near the water. The canyon trip leaves at 8:30, so you walk the Colored Canyon before the hottest part of the day.
  • Windy days: move boat trips later in the week and pull a desert trip forward.

For month-by-month detail, see our guide to the best time to visit Dahab.

Booking tips for your Dahab trip

All of the trips in these plans are booked on WhatsApp from the trip page. You do not pay in advance; you pay cash on the day. Hotel pickup from anywhere in Dahab and the drive back are included. A few practical points help the plan run smoothly:

  1. Book the fixed-day trips first. The All-in-One only runs on Mondays and Fridays, so if you want it, lock that day before arranging the rest.
  2. Place Mount Sinai next. Put it after a free or light day, and leave the following morning empty.
  3. Fill the rest around them. Sea and desert days slot in easily around those two.
  4. Carry cash. The Blue Hole protectorate fee and the Three Pools group ticket are paid on site and are not included; check the current amounts before you go. Tips are not included on several trips either.
  5. Carry your passport. There are police checkpoints on the roads, and the All-in-One asks you to bring the original plus a copy.

If you want ideas beyond these plans, the things to do in Dahab guide lists the main activities in and around town.

FAQ

How many days in Dahab is enough?

Three full days covers the Blue Hole plus either the desert canyons or Mount Sinai. Five days lets you add Mount Sinai and another trip without rushing, with free mornings to recover. Seven days is enough for most of the main trips plus a free day for a lesson or the beach. Do not count your arrival and departure days, since the drive from Sharm el-Sheikh takes part of them.

Can I do Mount Sinai and another trip on the same day?

Technically yes, but it is not a good idea. The Mount Sinai trip picks you up at 22:00 and returns at about 11:00 the next morning, so you walk through the night. A full day trip before it means arriving tired, and anything the next morning clashes with your return. Keep the day before light and the morning after free.

Which days does the All-in-One trip run?

The Dahab All-in-One runs only on Mondays and Fridays, from 6:00 to 19:00. It combines a quad bike, a camel ride, Bedouin tea, a banana boat, a glass-bottom boat and a yacht cruise with snorkelling and lunch. Bring your passport original and a copy, and closed shoes for the quad. Check the trip page for what is included and the current price.

Can I visit Mount Sinai with the Sinai-only stamp?

No. The free Sinai-only stamp you may get at Sharm el-Sheikh airport covers the coastal resorts such as Dahab, but not St Catherine or Mount Sinai. For the sunrise trip you need a full Egypt visa. Visa rules can change, so check your government’s current entry advice and the official e-visa site before you travel.

What is the best first trip for a short Dahab itinerary?

A good first trip is the Blue Hole, Abu Galum and Blue Lagoon day trip. It runs from 9:00 to 17:00, includes snorkelling the reef wall at the Blue Hole, a zodiac ride north to Ras Abu Galum and free time at the Blue Lagoon. The protectorate fee for the Blue Hole is paid on site in cash; check the current amount before you go.

Should I book all my Dahab trips in advance?

Book the trips that fix your plan, such as the All-in-One on a Monday or Friday and the Mount Sinai night, as soon as you know your dates. For the rest, keeping some flexibility lets you move boat days if the wind picks up; message on WhatsApp to check your date. There is no prepayment; you pay cash on the day.
